Overview

Cobalt-57 bleomycin is a radiolabeled complex formed by chelating the radioisotope cobalt-57 with the chemotherapeutic antibiotic bleomycin. Its primary use is as a radiopharmaceutical agent for diagnostic imaging, particularly single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or radionuclide scanning, for the evaluation of tumors in humans, most notably in head and neck cancers, lung cancer, lymphoma, and for screening metastatic disease. In this complex, bleomycin acts as a carrier, targeting tumors, while cobalt-57 allows imaging due to its gamma emission. The mechanism of tumor targeting is attributed to bleomycin's affinity for DNA and selective uptake in neoplastic tissue, while the mechanism of action of the imaging relies on the radioactivity of cobalt-57, not the cytotoxic function of bleomycin. Cobalt-57 bleomycin is not used for therapy but solely for diagnostic imaging.[2][4][6][5][1][3][8]
