Overview

Cobalt protoporphyrin IX is a synthetic metalloprotoporphyrin in which the central iron atom of heme (protoporphyrin IX) is replaced by a cobalt ion. It is an experimental small molecule compound with the chemical formula C34H32CoN4O4 and a molecular weight of approximately 619.6 g/mol[1][3]. Cobalt protoporphyrins are used primarily as research tools to study heme metabolism and enzyme activity due to their ability to mimic or interfere with natural heme functions. They have been investigated for their antimicrobial properties against various pathogens and for their effects on biological pathways involving heme oxygenase[6]. The mechanism of action may involve modulation or inhibition of enzymes that interact with porphyrins or hemes, such as prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 (COX-1)[1]. There are no approved clinical indications for this compound.
