Overview
Cobaltous sulfate is an inorganic compound with the formula CoSO4. It is a water-soluble salt of cobalt and appears as a reddish-brown crystalline solid. Cobaltous sulfate is primarily used as a micronutrient in some multivitamin and animal feed supplements[1][6]. In biological systems, it acts by stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), thereby mimicking hypoxia and stimulating erythropoietin production; this mechanism can upregulate adaptive responses to low oxygen conditions[4]. However, excessive exposure can be toxic and has been associated with carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity[2][3][5]. Industrially, it is also used in battery manufacturing, pigments, ceramics, catalysts, and electroplating[6].
