Overview

Cobra venom factor (CVF) is a structural and functional analog of the complement component C3b, typically derived from the venom of cobras such as *Naja naja* or *Naja atra*. It functions as a potent activator of the alternative complement pathway by forming a stable C3/C5 convertase (CVF,Bb) that is resistant to inactivation by host regulatory proteins like Factor H and Factor I. This results in continuous, uncontrolled cleavage of C3 and C5, leading to the rapid and exhaustive depletion of these complement components from the blood. CVF is extensively used as an experimental pharmacological tool to achieve systemic complement depletion in animal models, allowing researchers to study the role of the complement system in various pathological conditions, including inflammation, autoimmune diseases, infections, and transplant rejection. While primarily a research reagent, its ability to modulate the innate immune response has been explored in experimental models of transplantation and ischemia-reperfusion injury.
