Overview

Cocaine is a tropane alkaloid and a powerful central nervous system stimulant derived from the leaves of the coca plant native to South America. It is most commonly encountered as an illicit recreational drug but has limited medical use as a local anesthetic in certain surgical procedures. Cocaine acts primarily by blocking the reuptake of monoamine neurotransmitters—dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin—by inhibiting their respective transporters in the brain. This leads to increased concentrations of these neurotransmitters in synaptic clefts and results in heightened alertness, euphoria, increased energy, and strong addictive potential. The blockade of dopamine reuptake is considered especially important for its rewarding effects and high abuse liability[1][2][4][5][6][8].
