Overview

Coccinia cordifolia, also known as Coccinia indica or ivy gourd, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Cucurbitaceae family native to India and other tropical regions. It has been widely used in traditional medicine for the management of diabetes and other ailments. The leaves, roots, and fruits are utilized medicinally. Clinical studies suggest that extracts of Coccinia cordifolia may have hypoglycemic effects in patients with mild type 2 diabetes by reducing fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels[1][3]. The precise mechanism of action remains unclear but is believed to involve modulation of glucose metabolism pathways[5]. In addition to its antidiabetic properties, various parts of the plant have demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective activities[5][7]. Coccinia cordifolia is primarily marketed as a dietary supplement ingredient rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
