Overview

Cochliobolus spicifer is a species of dematiaceous fungus in the family Pleosporaceae, order Pleosporales. It is primarily known as a fungal plant pathogen that infects a wide range of hosts, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The organism causes diseases such as leaf spot and root rot on various crops and has been associated with spring dead spot of Bermuda grass. Its transmission is most frequently through seed contamination. C. spicifer can survive as thick-walled conidia or mycelium in soil or crop debris, with the sexual stage being less important for its disease cycle[2][5]. In addition to its role as a plant pathogen, extracts containing C. spicifer are used in allergenic testing mixtures for diagnostic purposes[6]. The fungus also produces secondary metabolites with potential bioactive properties[3].
