Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cocoa extract is a dietary supplement derived from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao plant. It contains bioactive compounds such as flavanols (notably (-)-epicatechin and catechin), xanthine molecules (theobromine and caffeine), and antioxidant phytochemicals like protocatechuic acid. Upon oral administration, these constituents inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and increase nitric oxide production by activating endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). This leads to vasodilation, improved blood flow, and decreased blood pressure. Cocoa extract is primarily used for cardiovascular health benefits—including potential reduction in cardiovascular disease mortality—and has also been studied for its effects on high cholesterol, memory function, aging skin, asthma, bronchitis, infectious intestinal diseases, diarrhea, and as an expectorant for lung congestion[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
