Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cocoa flavonoids (primarily flavanols such as epicatechin, catechin, and procyanidins) are naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds found in cocoa beans (*Theobroma cacao*). They are widely studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective properties. Cocoa flavonoids promote cardiovascular health by enhancing endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity, which increases nitric oxide bioavailability, leading to vasodilation, improved blood flow, and reduced blood pressure. Additionally, they have been shown to support cognitive function, improve retinal microcirculation, and modulate metabolic pathways (such as AMPK and AKT) to improve glucose tolerance. Major clinical evaluations, such as the COSMOS (COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study) trial, have investigated their long-term effects on cardiovascular disease, cancer prevention, and cognitive decline.
