Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cod liver oil is a natural dietary supplement extracted from the livers of Atlantic cod (Gadus species). It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids—primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—as well as vitamins A and D. The primary mechanisms of action are attributed to its omega-3 content, which can reduce inflammation and prevent blood from clotting easily. Vitamin A supports immune function and eye health, while vitamin D aids calcium absorption for bone health. Cod liver oil has been used historically to prevent rickets due to vitamin D deficiency and is currently marketed for heart health, joint support in arthritis, cognitive function, immunity enhancement, and other general wellness purposes. However, strong scientific evidence supporting many of these uses remains limited[1][2][4][5][6][8].
