Overview

Cod protein is a high-quality, lean dietary protein derived from cod fish (Gadus morhua), available both from fish fillets and from residual materials like backbones and skin. It is being investigated as a dietary supplement and nutraceutical for its potential metabolic health benefits. Clinical and preclinical studies have explored its role in managing conditions related to obesity. Research suggests that supplementation with cod protein may improve insulin sensitivity, reduce postprandial glucose concentrations, lower circulating levels of nonesterified fatty acids, and exert anti-inflammatory effects, such as reducing C-reactive protein. [8] Some studies indicate these effects may be mediated by normalizing insulin signaling pathways (like PI 3-kinase/Akt) in skeletal muscle and increasing levels of the hormone adiponectin. [2, 6] It is typically administered orally in tablet or powder form.
