Overview

Codeine-N-Oxide is a semi-synthetic opiate and an active metabolite of codeine formed by oxidation. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as morphinans. Codeine-N-Oxide acts as a weak opioid agonist at the mu-opioid receptor but is considerably less potent than its parent compound, codeine. Like other N–oxides in this chemical family (e.g., morphine-N–oxide), it has been studied as a potential pharmaceutical drug but currently has no accepted medical use and is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States due to its high abuse potential and lack of recognized safety or efficacy[1][2][4]. It may be found as an impurity or degradation product in some pharmaceutical preparations containing codeine[8].
