Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Codelac (Коделак) is a brand of antitussive medications developed and marketed by the Russian pharmaceutical company OTCPharm. The flagship product, Codelac tablets, is a combination medication containing codeine, sodium bicarbonate, licorice root (Glycyrrhiza), and Thermopsis lanceolata herb. Codeine serves as the primary active ingredient, acting as a central antitussive by agonizing mu-opioid receptors in the cough center of the brain to suppress the cough reflex. Sodium bicarbonate acts as an expectorant by reducing the viscosity of bronchial mucus, while the herbal extracts provide additional expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects. The Codelac brand also includes Codelac Neo, which contains the non-opioid small molecule butamirate citrate for the treatment of dry cough, and Codelac Broncho, a mucolytic combination containing ambroxol for productive coughs. The original codeine-containing formulation is subject to strict regulations in Russia due to its opioid content.
