Codergocrine mesylate (also known as dihydroergotoxine mesylate or ergoloid mesylates) is a small-molecule mixture of the methanesulfonate salts of four dihydrogenated ergot alkaloids: dihydroergocornine, dihydroergocristine, and alpha- and beta-dihydroergocryptine. Originally developed by Albert Hofmann at Sandoz (now Novartis), it acts as a multi-receptor modulator with affinity for dopaminergic, serotonergic, and alpha-adrenergic receptors, as well as the GABA-A receptor chloride channel. It is primarily used to treat symptoms of age-related cognitive decline, dementia (including Alzheimer's and vascular dementia), and cerebrovascular insufficiency. The drug is thought to improve cerebral metabolism and oxygen uptake while centrally decreasing vascular tone through alpha-adrenoceptor blockade.
