Overview

Codonopsis root, derived from the plant *Codonopsis pilosula* or related species, is a staple herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as Dangshen. It is primarily utilized as a Qi tonic to treat deficiencies in the spleen and lungs, addressing clinical symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and chronic diarrhea. Pharmacologically, the root contains active constituents including polysaccharides, saponins, and alkaloids, which contribute to its immunomodulatory, anti-fatigue, and gastroprotective effects. In modern clinical research, specific formulations such as Lu-Dang-Shen oral liquid have been investigated for their efficacy in improving digestive function in convalescent COVID-19 patients, and the herb is a common component in traditional formulas like Tong Xie Yao Fang for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
