Overview

Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance that is naturally produced in the body. It functions as an antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage and plays a crucial role in energy production within cells. CoQ10 is found in the mitochondria where it participates in the electron transport chain to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Levels of CoQ10 in the body decrease with age and may be lower in people with certain conditions such as heart disease, cancer, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and muscular dystrophies. It is also found in foods like meat, fish, and vegetable oils, though dietary sources typically don't provide enough to significantly raise blood levels.
