Overview

This nutraceutical combination therapy was investigated by Columbia University for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The regimen consists of four primary components: coenzyme Q10, acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In clinical trial contexts, this combination is often administered alongside a conditioning exercise program, a protocol collectively referred to as ENT (Exercise and Nutraceutical Therapy). The therapy is designed to address mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, which are hypothesized to be central to the pathogenesis of CFS. Coenzyme Q10 supports the mitochondrial electron transport chain; acetyl-L-carnitine facilitates the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation; alpha-lipoic acid serves as a cofactor for key mitochondrial enzymes and acts as a potent antioxidant; and DHA provides structural support for cellular membranes and exerts anti-inflammatory effects.
