Coenzyme Q10 mucoadhesive tablets

Coenzyme Q10 mucoadhesive tablets are a specialized topical formulation developed by Cairo University for the treatment of symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP). Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone or ubiquinol, is a lipid-soluble, vitamin-like small molecule that serves as a potent antioxidant and a key component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. In this formulation, which contains 40% CoQ10, the drug is delivered via a mucoadhesive tablet designed to adhere to the oral mucosa, ensuring prolonged contact and localized delivery to OLP lesions. The therapeutic rationale is based on CoQ10's ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and mitigate oxidative stress, which are significant factors in the pathogenesis and progression of OLP. A Phase 1 clinical trial conducted at Cairo University compared this formulation to topical triamcinolone acetonide, demonstrating its potential as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant alternative to traditional corticosteroids.
