Overview

Coffea arabica pulp extract is a natural product derived from the pulp of the Coffea arabica cherry, a significant by-product of the coffee industry. This extract is rich in various bioactive compounds, including polyphenols such as chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, catechin, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid, as well as alkaloids like caffeine and trigonelline. It exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities, primarily acting as a potent antioxidant by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting oxidative stress. Its anti-inflammatory properties stem from the inhibition of inflammatory enzymes, reduction of NF-kB activation, and modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and adipokines. The extract also demonstrates metabolic benefits, including the inhibition of intestinal cholesterol absorption through NPC1L1 downregulation and LXRα activation, improvement of insulin sensitivity, and inhibition of glucose transport via alpha-glucosidase. Furthermore, it shows anti-aging and skin-whitening potential by inhibiting enzymes such as tyrosinase, collagenase, elastase, and hyaluronidase. Due to these diverse effects, Coffea arabica pulp extract is being investigated for its applications as a nutraceutical for metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as in cosmetic formulations for anti-aging and skin brightening.
