Overview

Coffee charcoal is a medicinal substance produced by roasting coffee beans until they are blackened or charred. It is used primarily for its adsorptive and astringent properties in the gastrointestinal tract. Coffee charcoal can absorb substances in the stomach and intestines and may help reduce swelling due to its mild anti-inflammatory effects. It contains bioactive plant compounds such as chlorogenic acid isomers and caffeic acid that have been shown to inhibit cytokine release (TNF, IL-6) from immune cells in vitro[8]. Coffee charcoal is commonly used for diarrhea and has been investigated as part of combination therapies (such as MYRRHINIL-INTEST) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), particularly diarrhea-predominant IBS[5]. Its mechanism of action includes both physical adsorption of toxins/gases and pharmacological modulation of inflammatory pathways.
