Coffee extract is a substance derived from coffee, containing various bioactive compounds such as caffeine and pyrocatechol. Preclinical studies in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed animals suggest that coffee extract intake can prevent the reduction of lens glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AsA) levels, which are crucial for maintaining redox activity and preventing cataract formation. It has also been shown to reduce body weight increase and prevent the elevation of plasma cholesterol and triglycerides in HFD-fed animals, indicating potential benefits for metabolic syndrome and obesity-related cataracts. The effects are attributed to key constituents like caffeine and pyrocatechol.
