Overview

Cold-ethanol black tea extract is a specialized preparation of black tea (Camellia sinensis) produced by extracting the leaves with a 50% aqueous ethanol solution at room temperature, rather than using hot water or hot ethanol. This method preserves higher concentrations of gallic acid and catechins—bioactive polyphenols known for their antioxidant and metabolic effects—compared to conventional extraction methods. The resulting extract has demonstrated enhanced anti-obesity effects in preclinical studies, including greater reductions in body weight, body fat, blood glucose, cholesterol levels, and fatty liver development in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Unlike some other anti-obesity agents that impair adipocyte function or insulin sensitivity via PPARγ inhibition, this extract reduces fat mass without disrupting PPARγ-mediated adipogenesis or metabolic homeostasis. The main active ingredients are gallic acid and catechins; theaflavins and thearubigins are also present as complex flavonoids unique to oxidized (black) teas[2][3][5].
