Cold-pressed whale oil is an edible oil extracted from the blubber of whales, notably minke whale, through mechanical pressing at low temperatures, preserving bioactive components. It contains long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-n3-PUFA) and additional antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components distinct from fish oils. Studies in animal models and human interventions have shown that dietary supplementation with cold-pressed whale oil reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, inhibits atherosclerotic plaque formation, decreases lipid oxidation, and increases serum antioxidant activity. In vitro and animal studies indicate the oil's mechanisms include enhancing antioxidant capacity and modulating hepatic genes involved in cholesterol metabolism. Clinical research, largely conducted in Norway, has explored its use in cardiovascular disease prevention and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis[1][4][7]. However, its use is extremely limited today due to international whaling restrictions and trade bans, with current research focused mainly in jurisdictions such as Norway and Japan.
