Cold-stored platelet concentrate (CSP) is a blood product consisting of platelets collected from donors and stored at 1–6°C, rather than the conventional room temperature (20–24°C). This storage method slows metabolic activity and inhibits bacterial growth, reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections. CSPs are typically suspended in a platelet additive solution (PAS) and may undergo pathogen reduction processes. While CSPs have reduced post-transfusion survival compared to room temperature-stored platelets, they demonstrate enhanced hemostatic function—producing faster, stronger clots and showing increased activation profiles. These properties make CSP particularly suitable for treating active bleeding when conventional platelets are unavailable or impractical. The shelf-life of CSP is generally up to 14 days. Cold storage also reduces allergic transfusion reactions and aggregate formation compared to full plasma storage[1][3][5][7].
