Cold Stored Platelets (CSP) are a modified biological blood component being investigated for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock in trauma patients. Unlike standard platelets, which are stored at room temperature (20-24°C) for up to 5-7 days to maintain circulation time, CSP are stored at 1-6°C for up to 14 days. This cold storage is hypothesized to preserve platelet metabolic activity and enhance hemostatic function, making them more effective at stopping acute bleeding despite a shorter half-life in circulation. The product is being evaluated in the CriSP-HS (Cold Stored Platelet Early Intervention in Hemorrhagic Shock) trial, led by Dr. Jason Sperry at the University of Pittsburgh, to determine its feasibility, safety, and efficacy in reducing mortality among severely injured patients requiring large-volume transfusions.
