Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cold stored platelets (CSP) in 100% plasma are apheresis-derived platelet concentrates that are stored at refrigerated temperatures (1-6°C) rather than the conventional room temperature (20-24°C). This storage method offers several advantages, including enhanced hemostatic function, reduced risk of bacterial contamination, and potentially extended shelf life compared to room temperature stored platelets[3][4]. CSP have an "activated" profile and demonstrate greater aggregation responses to agonists, higher clot strength in viscoelastic testing, and improved adhesion under flow when compared to room temperature platelets of similar storage age[2]. While cold storage causes platelets to be cleared more rapidly from circulation after transfusion, their superior hemostatic properties make them particularly valuable for actively bleeding patients[3][5]. The FDA has provided guidance on alternative procedures for manufacturing cold-stored platelets, recommending they be prepared from apheresis platelets suspended in either 100% plasma or an FDA-approved platelet additive solution (PAS)[2][4].
