Overview

Coldamaris is a family of over-the-counter, carrageenan-based nasal and throat sprays and eye drops marketed primarily for the prevention and supportive treatment of common cold, flu-like viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, nasal congestion, and dryness of nasal and ocular mucosa. The key active component is Carragelose, a sulfated red-algae–derived iota-carrageenan (sometimes combined with kappa-carrageenan or sorbitol in specific variants) that forms a long-lasting, moist polymer film on mucosal surfaces; this physical barrier traps and inactivates respiratory viruses and helps prevent their attachment, entry, and replication, thereby reducing viral load and symptom duration. Coldamaris prophylactic and related nasal sprays are registered as medical devices rather than classical pharmaceuticals in many markets and have demonstrated antiviral and decongestant effects in clinical studies versus saline control in patients with common cold and seasonal allergic rhinitis. The Coldamaris line was originally developed by Marinomed Biotechnologie in collaboration with Sigmapharm, with manufacturing by MoNo Chem-Pharm-Produkte and subsequent licensing and commercialization in multiple countries by partners including Sigmapharm, Tachra Darou, and Unither Pharmaceuticals.
