Overview

ColdZyme is a mouth spray designed to prevent and reduce the duration of the common cold by creating a protective barrier in the throat. Developed by the Swedish company Enzymatica, the formulation consists of glycerol and Atlantic cod trypsin (Penzyme). When applied to the pharyngeal mucosa, the glycerol creates a transient hyperosmotic barrier that traps viruses, while the trypsin enzyme cleaves viral surface proteins, thereby deactivating the virus and preventing it from binding to human cell receptors. It is primarily used as a prophylactic or at the onset of cold symptoms to mitigate viral load in the upper respiratory tract. In many jurisdictions, including the European Union, it is regulated as a Class III medical device.
