Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Colesevelam hydrochloride MMX is a site-specific oral formulation of the bile acid sequestrant colesevelam, developed by Cosmo Pharmaceuticals using its proprietary Multi Matrix (MMX) technology. The MMX delivery system is engineered to delay the release of the active drug until it reaches the distal ileum and colon, which are the primary sites of action for treating bile acid malabsorption. Colesevelam works by binding to bile acids in the gastrointestinal tract, forming a non-absorbable complex that is excreted in the feces. This sequestration prevents bile acids from stimulating water and electrolyte secretion in the colon, thereby reducing the symptoms of idiopathic bile acid diarrhoea (BAD).
