colestipol

Colestipol is a bile acid sequestrant used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to reduce elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia who do not respond adequately to dietary changes. It works by binding bile acid in the intestine, forming a complex that is excreted in the feces, thereby preventing their reabsorption. This process increases the oxidation of cholesterol to bile acids, upregulates hepatic LDL receptors, and enhances clearance of LDL from plasma, resulting in decreased serum total and LDL cholesterol levels. Colestipol is not systemically absorbed and may also be used for other conditions as determined by a healthcare provider[1][6][7].
