Colgate Total

Colgate Total is a commercially available toothpaste developed by Colgate Palmolive. It is formulated with 0.32% sodium fluoride (1450 ppm NaF) and 0.3% triclosan. Sodium fluoride primarily works by interacting with hydroxyapatite in tooth enamel, converting it to fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid dissolution and enhances remineralization, thereby preventing dental caries. It also exerts antimicrobial effects by inhibiting bacterial enzymes like enolase. Triclosan acts as an antibacterial agent by inhibiting bacterial fatty acid synthesis, specifically targeting the enzyme enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (FabI), which is crucial for bacterial cell membrane formation and integrity. The toothpaste is indicated for controlling gingivitis and dental plaque.
