Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Colinfant Newborn is a live biotherapeutic product containing a lyophilized, non-pathogenic strain of *Escherichia coli* O83:K24:H31 (also known as strain A0 34/86). [2, 4, 5, 7, 9] Developed and manufactured by the Czech company Dyntec, it is an approved immunopreparation for oral administration in newborns and infants up to one year old. [1, 2, 5, 6] Its primary use is the prevention of hospital-acquired infections and various gastrointestinal diseases, especially in premature or non-breastfed infants. [2, 3] The mechanism of action involves the colonization of the infant's gut, where it competitively inhibits the adherence of pathogenic bacteria to the intestinal mucosa. [1, 4] Furthermore, it modulates the immune system by stimulating the production of both local (in the intestine and saliva) and systemic specific and non-specific antibodies. [1, 2, 5] Clinical use and studies have also suggested long-term benefits, including a reduced incidence of allergies and recurrent infections in later childhood. [1, 5, 16]
