Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Coliprotec** is a live oral vaccine for pigs, composed of non-pathogenic strains of *Escherichia coli*: O8:K87 (F4ac) alone (Coliprotec F4) or combined with O141:K94 (F18ac) in the bivalent form (Coliprotec F4/F18)[1][3][5][7]. It is used for the active immunization of pigs from at least 18 days of age to reduce the incidence of moderate to severe post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) caused by enterotoxigenic F4-positive or F18-positive *E. coli* and to decrease *E. coli* colonization and fecal shedding[1][5][7]. Upon oral administration, the live vaccine colonizes the gut, inducing mucosal immunity against the corresponding *E. coli* fimbrial antigens. The F4 or F18 fimbriae enable adhesion to pig intestinal mucosa, which is necessary for the initiation of infection; the vaccine preempts this via competitive exclusion and immune stimulation[3][11]. The onset of immunity is 7 days post-vaccination, with a duration of up to 21 days[1][5].
