Coliprotec F4

Coliprotec F4 is a live-attenuated bacterial vaccine designed for the active immunization of weaned piglets to reduce the incidence and severity of post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) expressing F4 fimbriae. Developed by Prevtec Microbia and currently marketed by Elanco, the vaccine contains a non-pathogenic E. coli strain (2134P) that expresses the F4 (K88) adhesion factor but does not produce enterotoxins. Administered orally via drinking water, the vaccine colonizes the porcine intestine, inducing a local mucosal immune response (primarily IgA) that prevents pathogenic E. coli from adhering to the intestinal wall. This biological approach provides an alternative to traditional antibiotic treatments for managing ETEC infections in swine production.
