Overview

Colistin is an antibiotic medication used as a last-resort treatment for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections such as those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter species. It belongs to the polymyxin class of antibiotics. The drug works by binding to fatty molecules on the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, disrupting the cytoplasmic membrane and causing leakage of cell contents that leads to bacterial cell death[1][2]. Colistimethate sodium is a prodrug administered intravenously or intramuscularly; it converts in vivo into active colistin. Colistin sulfate is mainly used topically or orally. Common side effects include kidney problems and neurological issues; serious side effects may include anaphylaxis and muscle weakness[1][2]. The drug was discovered in 1947 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1970[1].
