Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fengweilng is a brand name for colistin sulfate, a polymyxin antibiotic developed and marketed by Shanghai Shyndec Pharmaceutical. It is primarily used for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including *Acinetobacter baumannii*, *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*. The drug acts as a cationic surfactant that binds to the lipid A portion of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, leading to membrane disruption, increased permeability, and cell death. In China, colistin sulfate is available as a formulation for injection for systemic infections such as pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and complicated urinary tract infections, whereas in many other regions, colistin methanesulfonate is the preferred injectable form.
