Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, serving as a primary structural component of connective tissues such as skin, bones, tendons, and cartilage. [6] Due to its versatile properties, collagen is utilized across various applications, including as a dietary supplement, a medical device component, and in cosmetic procedures. As a dietary supplement, it is often taken to support joint and skin health by providing the amino acid building blocks for the body's own collagen synthesis. [8, 16] A specific formulation of technologically modified bovine collagen, Satiscoll®, has been studied for weight management; this formulation has low digestibility and high water-swelling capacity, which induces a feeling of fullness when ingested, thereby reducing hunger and aiding in weight loss. [10, 14, 17] In medical and cosmetic applications, collagen is used as an injectable dermal filler (e.g., Bellafill, Sunmax) to correct wrinkles and scars by providing volume and as a bulking agent for vocal fold augmentation to treat voice disorders like hypophonia. [2, 3, 15] Collagen can be derived from various sources, including bovine, porcine, and marine life, and can be processed into different forms, such as native collagen, gelatin, or hydrolyzed collagen peptides. [8, 9]
