Overview

Collagen + alginate is a combination biomaterial used in advanced wound care for the management of chronic and acute wounds. It typically consists of a freeze-dried (lyophilized) matrix of bovine-derived Type I collagen and calcium alginate. The collagen component serves a dual purpose: it acts as a sacrificial substrate to bind and inactivate excess matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that are often elevated in chronic wounds and impede healing, and it provides a structural scaffold that promotes the migration and attachment of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. The alginate component is highly absorbent; upon contact with wound exudate, it interacts with the fluid to form a hydrophilic gel. This gel maintains a moist wound environment, facilitates autolytic debridement, and allows for atraumatic dressing changes by preventing the dressing from adhering to the wound bed. This combination is widely indicated for pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and surgical sites.
