Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Collagen + gentamicin (brand name: Collatamp-G) is a local antibiotic implant consisting of a collagen matrix impregnated with gentamicin sulfate. It is used as an adjunct to systemic antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent surgical site infections, particularly sternal wound infections (SWI) following cardiac surgery. The collagen sponge, typically derived from bovine or equine sources, serves as a biodegradable delivery vehicle that releases high local concentrations of gentamicin directly into the wound. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This localized delivery minimizes systemic toxicity while providing broad-spectrum coverage against common surgical pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci.
