Overview

Collagen implants are medical devices or injectables composed primarily of purified collagen protein derived from animal (commonly bovine or porcine), human cadaveric sources, or recombinant technology. They are used for soft tissue augmentation and reinforcement in both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. Collagen implants can be formulated as gels or solid matrices and may be cross-linked to enhance durability. Their primary mechanism is to provide structural support by filling tissue defects (such as wrinkles or scars) and stimulating the body’s own fibroblasts to produce new collagen at the site of implantation. In surgical applications (e.g., surgical mesh), they reinforce soft tissues where weakness exists (such as hernias). In dermatology and aesthetic medicine, injectable forms are used for wrinkle reduction, scar correction, lip augmentation, and restoration of facial contours lost due to aging or trauma[2][6][8][9]. Collagen implants are biocompatible and resorbable; however, allergic reactions can occur with animal-derived products[8]. The most common source is Type I collagen from bovine skin but other sources include porcine dermis and human tissues[3][5].
