Overview

Collagen type II, particularly in its undenatured (native) form like UC-II, is a protein-based nutraceutical derived from sources such as chicken sternum cartilage. It is primarily used for the management of joint-related conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. [1, 5, 11] Unlike hydrolyzed collagen, which provides structural building blocks for cartilage, undenatured type II collagen operates through an immune-mediated mechanism known as 'oral tolerance'. [1, 2, 8] When taken orally in low doses (typically 40 mg/day), it interacts with the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), leading to the generation of regulatory T-cells. [1, 6] These specialized immune cells then help to suppress the body's inflammatory attack on its own joint cartilage, thereby reducing pain and inflammation. [1, 7] Clinical studies, including Phase III trials, have demonstrated its effectiveness and safety in treating rheumatoid arthritis, showing it to be a well-tolerated alternative, though generally less potent than conventional drugs like methotrexate. It is marketed as a dietary supplement. [11]
