Overview

Collagen type III is a major fibrillar collagen that is a key component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in various tissues, including skin, blood vessels, and internal organs. It is composed of three alpha-1(III) chains and plays a critical role in maintaining tissue integrity and elasticity. In therapeutic and biomedical research, collagen III is investigated for its ability to modulate the tumor microenvironment, promote wound healing, and serve as a scaffold for tissue engineering. It interacts with cell surface receptors such as integrins and discoidin domain receptors to influence cellular behaviors like adhesion, migration, and proliferation. In the context of oncology, it has been shown to influence tumor angiogenesis and growth when present in the tumor stroma.
