Collagenase type 1A is a proteolytic enzyme preparation derived from the bacterium Clostridium histolyticum, characterized by its ability to break down peptide bonds in native collagen fibers, especially types I, II, and III collagens. It is used primarily in biomedical research and tissue dissociation procedures for isolating cells from animal tissues, and it also has emerging use in treating fibrotic disorders such as Peyronie's disease, Dupuytren's contracture, keloids, and intervertebral disc herniation. The mechanism of action involves enzymatic cleavage of the triple helical region of collagen, leading to local degradation and lysis of collagenous extracellular matrices[1][2][5].
