Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CollaRx Gentamicin is a biodegradable and fully resorbable drug-device combination product developed by Innocoll using its proprietary CollaRx collagen-based drug delivery technology. It consists of the broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin impregnated into a purified bovine collagen matrix. The product is designed for local application to provide high concentrations of antibiotic directly at the site of potential or existing infection while maintaining low systemic levels to minimize toxicity. It has been developed in two primary tracks: a surgical implant for the prevention of surgical site infections (SSIs) in cardiac and colorectal surgeries, and a topical formulation for the treatment and prevention of diabetic foot infections. The collagen matrix acts as a scaffold that is eventually resorbed by the body, while the released gentamicin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.
