Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Collatamp G is an implantable, biodegradable topical antibiotic delivery system developed by Innocoll. It consists of a lyophilized collagen matrix derived from bovine Achilles tendon, impregnated with the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin sulfate. The device is designed to be placed directly into a surgical site before closure, where it provides a high local concentration of gentamicin to prevent surgical site infections (SSIs) while maintaining low systemic exposure. While approved and marketed in over 50 countries for various surgical applications, including cardiac and orthopedic surgeries, a large-scale Phase 3 clinical trial in the United States for colorectal surgery (NCT00600925) failed to demonstrate efficacy and paradoxically showed higher infection rates, leading to a halt in its U.S. regulatory progress for that specific indication.
