Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Collatamp G is a surgically implantable, biodegradable combination product developed by Innocoll for the prevention of surgical wound infections. It consists of a purified bovine collagen matrix impregnated with gentamicin sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. The product is designed to be placed directly into the surgical site before closure, where it provides high local bactericidal concentrations of gentamicin while maintaining low systemic levels, thereby reducing the risk of systemic toxicities such as nephrotoxicity. The collagen matrix acts as a scaffold that is gradually resorbed by the body over several weeks. While approved in over 50 countries for various surgical applications including cardiac and orthopedic procedures, a major Phase 3 trial in the United States for colorectal surgery failed to demonstrate efficacy in reducing surgical site infections, leading to a paradoxical increase in infection rates in some study populations.
