Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Collatamp G is a surgically implantable, biodegradable topical antibiotic product developed by Innocoll for the prevention of surgical site infections. It consists of a lyophilized collagen matrix derived from bovine tendons impregnated with the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin sulfate. Upon implantation, the collagen matrix biodegrades over several days, releasing high local concentrations of gentamicin directly to the wound area while maintaining low systemic levels to minimize the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. Although approved in over 50 countries for various surgical applications, a large-scale Phase 3 trial (NCT00600925) evaluating its efficacy in colorectal surgery failed to meet its primary endpoint and paradoxically showed higher infection rates in the treatment group compared to controls.
