Colloidal bismuth pectin is an orally administered gastric mucosal protectant consisting of a compositionally non-stoichiometric complex of pectin and bismuth. In the acidic stomach environment, it forms a viscous colloidal layer that adheres preferentially to injured or inflamed gastric mucosa, helping shield the surface from acid and pepsin and supporting mucus secretion and mucosal repair. It also has local anti-Helicobacter pylori activity and is used in bismuth-containing eradication regimens with acid suppression and antibiotics.
