Overview

Colloidal oatmeal is a finely ground powder made from whole oats (Avena sativa) that is dispersed in water to form a suspension. It is rich in beta-glucan, avenanthramides (oat phenols), vitamin E, linoleic acid, and oleic acid. These components provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and help restore the skin barrier. Colloidal oatmeal acts as a skin protectant by forming a physical barrier on the skin surface to lock in moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss. It soothes itching and irritation associated with conditions such as eczema (atopic dermatitis), dry or sensitive skin, rashes from poison ivy/oak/sumac, insect bites, psoriasis, and other minor irritations. The US FDA recognizes colloidal oatmeal as an over-the-counter (OTC) active ingredient for temporary protection and relief of minor skin irritations[1][2][5]. Clinical studies have shown its efficacy in improving symptoms of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis[1].
