Overview

Colloidal sulfur is a finely dispersed form of elemental sulfur (S) with a molecular weight of 32.07. It is widely used in cosmetics and dermatological products for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, keratolytic (exfoliating), and sebum-regulating properties[1][2][3][4][6]. In skincare formulations—especially those targeting acne—it helps clear excess keratin and sebum from pores, inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi on the skin surface, reduces inflammation associated with acne lesions, and promotes healing of damaged skin barriers[3][4][5]. Colloidal sulfur is generally considered milder than traditional precipitated or sublimed sulfur due to its smaller particle size and encapsulation technologies (e.g., microencapsulation with acacia gum or collagen), which improve stability and reduce irritation[3][6]. It is not systemically absorbed when used topically.
